Group projects were never my forte, so I found myself concerned about our group project. When previously assigned group projects the experience was never in my favor. Therefore, when told we were having a group project I was skeptical partly because I was not familiar with everyone in the class. However, this class displayed I had made a misjudgment about group projects.
First impressions
I was first contacted by Adel where shortly after I joined the group chat. We all spoke for a while and then we started on the decision of the best RFP for us. The first idea for an RPF we had was invalid due to the fact it was not subject to NY. This applied to us to pick the current RFP, where we ended up finding success. We decided after reading the RPF who would be in charge of separate sections of the proposal. I was appointed to the proposals cover page and appendix. Malesa wrote the introduction and discussion. Maggie reported on the P2 activities and project yields. While Adel wrote the references and formatted the activity outcomes. In our RPF we were presented with a sample proposal, which we keenly studied to write the most accurate proposal.
As a rule, we established a space between each other where no question too dumb and we were all respectful to each other. We met to discuss our project at least once a week. Through this, we discussed with each other what we were potentially having trouble with. Furthermore, our group was very efficient due to the fact that we gave our efforts to complete each assignment early. This gave us the ability to always stay on top of our specific duties. This was inspiring to me because I had never experienced a group setting where everyone was equally productive. Consequently, we were able to successfully complete the project with no major obstacles.
Responsibilities
As a group, we decided what sections we would each be assigned. They directed me to complete the cover page and the appendix. I was anxious at first that I would not become a valuable asset to the group. This is partly because I felt out of place, all my group members seemed to have more experience with engineering. My start in the class was also not to my desired liking. Regardless, this only prompted me to always try my best to improve the process of our group work. This meant to me researching information my other group members needed. Moreover, I completed half of the cover page on the first day of the group meeting. I then decided it was best to finish the whole page after everyone had completed their parts. This would help me to better synchronize what I wanted to say with the group’s narrative. The appendix perplexed me at first but after inquiry, I was able to design a creative table. We reviewed the final product together and made sure everything was in order.
In the peer review, I found that peer review with a group is more effective than individually. This is because we could extract multiple feedback rather than just one. The reviews helped us to better prepare our final proposal draft. Using the feedback, we fine-tuned what we had originally produced. This forwarded us on to start the group presentation portion of the syllabus.
In the group presentation, I felt we were more confident in our abilities as a group. The decision making on who would complete each collection of slides operated the same as before. I was charged to do the cover page while completing the survey and conclusion. Malesa did the introduction slides. While Maggie and Adel reported between the two major points. The group presentation process was very easy due to the fact that we all knew what we had to do. We placed specific days for all of us to be done with sections. Where we insightfully covered each of our slides together as a group on two separate occasions. This guided us to perform a great PowerPoint presentation.
Future impressions
After completing the English 210 group project I now have more trust in the process of group work. This is because I have not worked with many groups that everyone had a working hand on the final product. The group worked well together because of that one fact. We all talked weekly to better accomplish our different tasks. Hence, there are no improvements I would make for my next group project. It is actually through this project that I now know what a successful group project is comprised of. Through this experience, I will now pay more attention to who I pick to be in my group. In addition to this, I would suggest completing each assignment before the due dates. This keeps us on schedule and guarantees that we will complete the group project on time. Altogether, these are the various lessons I’ve learned from this project. Lessons that I am confident will further benefit me in college.
